Searching for the Elusive Harrison’s Penstemon

Did you know Eagle County is home to a very rare and beautiful flower? In fact, West Avon Preserve is one of the only places in the world where you can find the elusive Harrington’s Penstemon. Come out to see this rare beauty and learn about the abundant life in the sagebrush community.

Eagle Valley Land Trust, Town of Avon, and Betty Ford Alpine Gardens will co-lead a hike on West Avon Preserve teaching about the wildflowers and other plants found in the sagebrush community. West Avon Preserve is conserved forever through a valuable partnership between Eagle Valley Land Trust and the Town of Avon.

When: Tuesday, June 27, 2023 from 9:00 to 11:00 am

Where: West Avon Preserve in Avon, CO. We will meet at the PB&J Trailhead (Trail Map)
Directions from Avon:
Drive North on Avon Road
At the traffic circle, take 2nd exit onto Nottingham Road
At the stop sign, take a Right onto Metcalf Road
Drive 1.2 Miles
Turn left onto Old Trail Road
Drive 0.3 Miles
Trailhead will be on your left (just past Bear Trap Road on your right)

Bring: We will be encountering unpredictable weather and conditions in the field. Those interested should come prepared to spend 2-3 hours outside with sun protection, water, proper layers for Colorado weather, sturdy waterproof shoes, and trekking poles, if desired.

Weather: This hike is weather-dependent, please check EVLT’s Facebook or Instagram (@eaglevalleylandtrust) on the day of the hike for information if there is inclement weather.

This hike is free and open to the public but space is limited. Please email stewardship@evlt.org or call (970) 748-7654 for more information. Although we love dogs, they can have an impact, especially for wildlife. Please leave your furry friends at home.
