Horticulture Intern – Summer 2013
To say the least, my summer at the Alpine gardens was incredible. I don’t think there was ever two days that were quite the same. The gardens have so much to offer to students of horticulture, with plants from all around the world. A short walk through takes you through plants of the high Rockies all the way to the Himalayas. There were so many new plants and different cultural requirements to learn about that I’m sure there are still a few plants I never saw. The summer also took us to some great locations from mapping out Penstemon above Gypsum, or collecting seed high above Rifle.
The garden staff was second to none. It’s a small organization and you get to see a little bit of every aspect of running the garden. Nick really knows his stuff and is great to work with; everyone in the office is super friendly and always willing to help. They took great care of us as interns, and Gena was a blast to spend the summer with.
There’s nothing quite like spending a summer in the mountains. The weather is perfect and the scenery is beautiful. There are so many things to do right in Vail and tons of great things to do all around the valley. I was thrilled to take a trip out to Utah with Nick and Gena . It was an incredible summer with people I’ll never forget and experiences that will stick with me for a lifetime.
