Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization, established in1986. Situated in Vail’s Ford Park this is the highest botanical garden in the world. With 5 acres of gardens and an Education Center the mission is to ‘deepen understanding and promote conservation of alpine plants and fragile mountain environments”.
The Gardens has an operating budget of approximately $1,200,000 including two gifts shops and a growing endowment. In the past the Gardens has had several, successful Capital Campaigns, including a recent $4 million campaign for the Education Center.
We seek a new Director of Development to build a program that will support the mission of Betty Ford Alpine Gardens by funding the annual operations and building the endowment for the future. This will be accomplished by widening the Gardens donor base, managing and growing the membership program, grant writing and developing events. From time to time the Director of Development may also lead capital campaigns that the Board of Trustees embarks on as part of our future master planning.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:
The Director of Development is a senior management position responsible for a program that financially supports the mission of Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Responsible for a major gifts portfolio and managing the membership and annual gifts program. He/she reports to the Executive Director, and manages the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects – including endowments, foundations, individuals and corporations – working with the Board’s Development Committee as well as other relevant Board Committees.
Responsibilities require an individual comfortable with personal engagement including stewardship of past, current and development of future donors through personal visits, articulate correspondence, timely gift acknowledgements, and strategic administration of naming opportunities. This will involve coordination and leadership of other staff members, volunteers and Board members to achieve fund raising goals as well as one’s personal initiative. In addition to these front line duties, the Director of Development is responsible for maintenance and enhancement of the donor database used in the development process. The Garden uses the eTapestry donor database.
The successful candidate will present a successful career progression in high quality organizations, having assumed increasing responsibility and demonstrated success in fundraising. Presence gained through experience in a senior development role and the ability to rapidly familiarize oneself with all aspects of the Garden’s operations in order to articulate fundraising needs and goals to donors, prospects and all other constituencies is mandatory. This will require exemplary written and oral communication skills to audiences of varying sophistication and size.
Candidates must exhibit passion, persuasiveness, imagination, patience, insight and empathy in order to be successful in this position as well as a keen financial mind and an understanding of the tax implications and complexity of competing for donations in this increasingly competitive arena. In short, we seek an individual who will be one of our primary ambassadors and immediately able to assume this role. This will be a very special individual who can balance and lead a variety of activities simultaneously for Betty Ford Alpine Gardens as we endeavor to continue as one of the country’s best loved and admired botanical gardens.
Quality educational credentials are required with a minimum of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. We highly weight relevant fundraising experience in well-respected organizations. Candidates must have knowledge of computer systems and donor databases and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Candidates who exhibit enthusiasm, presence and ability to quickly become conversant with our goals, needs and plans for the future as well as having the potential to assume greater responsibilities over time will receive favorable consideration.

Seasonal - Front Desk Greeter
Seasonal – 20 hours per week
- Greet visitors. Project energy and enthusiasm – make the area a warm and inviting place for visitors to the Gardens and Education Center.
- Assist callers in a professional and friendly manner.
- Maintains safe and clean reception area by complying with procedures.
- Assists in keeping Education Center display room tidy and in order. Cleans and organizes materials for the public as needed.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Completes sales and processes payments of Education Center items and/or payment for programming.
- Effectively communicates Gardens events and programs to the public.
- Willingness to learn about the Gardens as to communicate with visitors.
Must be 15 years or older. Willing to work Saturdays for one (8) hour shift and 2 weekday shifts.
Qualifications: Reliable transportation required.

Seasonal - Events
Seasonal – 20 hours per week
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is the highest botanical garden in North America and serves as an outdoor classroom for families to discover the wonders of the Rocky Mountains. The Alpine Gardens provides free access to an estimated 100,000 visitors annually and offers facility rentals of stunning spaces including the Rooftop Terrace and Gardens. We are looking for a self-motivated individual that can keep up in a fast-paced environment with direction.
Must be 15 years or older. Duties may include, but are not limited to: Assisting the event leader and clients in coordinating their events with tables, chairs, and other needs. Setup, breakdown and cleaning of event site and equipment. The ideal candidate must possess excellent customer service skills and a desire to learn about event management. MUST be available at least 1 weekend day as needed.
Must be at least 15 years old. Reliable transportation required and willingness to work generally one weekend day.
